County Releases Sustainable Development Study of Stanford Campus

SAN JOSE – The Santa Clara County Planning Department today released a sustainable development study (SDS) supplement related to ongoing development on the Stanford University Campus to determine the maximum appropriate buildout for all of Stanford’s unincorporated lands.

The study is available online here​. 

The study was originally required as a condition of approval associated with the 2000 General Use Permit. The University submitted, and the Board of Supervisors accepted, such a study in 2009 but it did not fully address the question of maximum appropriate buildout.

Conducted by the County, the new study found that Stanford University could almost triple in density (from just over fifteen million square feet to more than 44 million square feet) without having to expand beyond Junipero Serra Boulevard. That means that the University could continue to grow at its historic rate of 200,000 square feet of growth a year for another century without expanding beyond the flats into the Foothills.
