NAMI Santa Clara County’s Community Peer Program matches people with a mental health condition with a mentor who has walked in their shoes and can provide support around learning and practicing coping skills and self-care. Participants establish a relationship with a mentor for up to four months and work on establishing goals, connecting with resources that may be of assistance, accessing social engagement opportunities, practicing self-advocacy, and exploring potential lifestyle adjustments. Supervisor Simitian put forth a grant from the County so NAMI could accept more community members and families into this program to access the support they need.
Supervisor Simitian has also supported other mental health programs involving peer support, including Youth Community Service and Teen Mental Health First Aid.
