Food insecurity is an often-unseen hardship that affects residents in Santa Clara County. Low-income families, and their children, are especially susceptible to food insecurity concerns. When financial uncertainties occur, families often will cut their food budgets in favor of other expenses. Supervisor Simitian has worked with local community-based organizations to help provide supplemental food and essential needs assistance for those who might otherwise go hungry.
Getting food to where it's needed is one solution of many. Providing resources to organizations, such as West Valley Community Services and the Mountain View Whisman School District, allows these groups to bring food into the heart of their communities through mobile food pantries. In other cases, such as with the non-profit Children’s Health Council (CHC), a better solution is to support their on-site food pantry. It is important to support solutions that best fit a community’s needs.
