“Emergencies do not know or care about County lines,” said Simitian. “Having a permanent community center to serve the Loma Prieta community is vital to the community’s safety and wellbeing. But this space isn’t just about safety; it will also be a resource for various community activities.”
Aware of the fire risk, as well as weather and climate challenges that residents living in the Santa Cruz mountains face, Supervisor Simitian championed public safety and ‘community building’ for the Loma Prieta community which is located in both Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties. To enhance emergency services and community resources particularly in the event of an earthquake, wildfire or a PG&E power outage, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a 1:2 County matching grant proposed by County Supervisor Joe Simitian to support the restoration of the Loma Prieta Community Center on its North Campus to replace a prior community center on its South Campus which was destroyed by fire in 2015.
