Lehigh Cement and Permanente Quarry Information
Although the hills outside the City of Cupertino have been mined for limestone since the early 1900s, and the Lehigh cement plant operational since 1958, this heavy industry is now located adjacent to residential neighborhoods, creating ongoing environmental, health and safety challenges. When Supervisor Joe Simitian returned to the Board of Supervisors in 2013, he pushed for increased oversight at Lehigh, holding the company accountable to environmental regulations and aiding the public’s understanding of and access to the state, federal and local agencies that have jurisdiction over the site.
Holding annual meetings where members of the public can get updates from the various regulatory agencies and ask questions of them, has become a cornerstone of Supervisor Simitian’s commitment to transparency for the public.
